The governing council of the university of Lagos has sacked the institution’s vice chancellor, Professor Olawatoyin Ogundipe
A statement signed by the university’s registrar Oladeji Azeez said it was as a result of wrong doing, gross misconduct and financial recklessness.
Ait gathered that his removal was revealed on Wednesday during an emergency meeting of the Governing Council of the institution which held at the National Universities Commission, NUC, Abuja, which was presided over by the university’s Pro-Chancellor wale Babalakin.
The emergency meeting came months after the indefinite postponement of the governing council’s meeting.
The meeting which has suffered setbacks following the face-off between the Academic staff union of the university, UNILAG chapter, the management, and the Wale Babalakin-led governing council, had seen the lecturers threatening to the down tool.
Ait also gathered that the notice of Wednesday’s meeting which was signed by the university’s registrar, Oladejo Azeez, on August 10, noted that the emergency meeting was commissioned by the council chairman, Babalakin in response to a request by the now sacked vice-chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, in a letter on July 15.
Just before the nationwide shutdown of schools as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the ASUU Unilag chairman Dele Ashiru issued a statement over the unhealthy relationship between the management and the council.
Sources from the National universities commission who spoke to AIT off-camera, expressed shock on how the removal of professor Ogundipe was possible as there are only four external members in a university governing council and the rest internal members controlled by the vice-chancellor.
